See our latest Virginia Lottery winners from May

We’re back with the latest edition of the Big Winners map for May!  While Virginia Lottery Customer Service Centers remained closed last month, many winners took advantage of the option to claim their winning Lottery tickets by mail.  In May, we had more than 500 players win $1,000 or more- that added up to more than $8 million in prizes!  Ready to learn more about who won big Lottery prizes last month?  Let’s go!

To kick off May, we were excited to award one of the top prizes of $177,777 in our Lucky 7s Tripler Scratcher. The winner was Jeff Melick of Newport News. Mr. Melick had another winning Scratcher in his possession, but he initially was going to wait until Virginia Lottery Customer Service Centers reopened to claim his prize. That plan changed, however, when he found himself in possession of another winning ticket.

“I kind of went numb,” he told Virginia Lottery officials. “I was doing good with the $1,000 winner.”

There are still two other $177,777 top prizes remaining in the Lucky 7s Tripler game.

Our next big winner was Timothy Jones of Ruckersville. You might call his $250,000 win a smokin’ prize. When Mr. Jones quit smoking three years ago, he decided to take that money instead and play the Lottery. That approach paid off when he scratched a Power Shot Scratcher and won the game’s top prize.

“I had to do a double take,” he exclaimed. “I didn’t believe it. I still don’t!”

Finally, our biggest win of the month came at a Virginia Lottery retailer in Clarksville. It was early one morning, and Brian Beader just wanted a cup of coffee before heading to his construction job in Mecklenburg County. While at the store, he bought a 50X The Money Scratcher. When he scratched the ticket, he discovered he won the game’s top prize of $5 million!

“I looked at it, and I thought, ‘Wow, I think I hit this!,’” he later shared with Lottery officials. “This is real!”

Each color on the map represents a different game category- Scratchers are shown in green, draw games such as Mega Millions and Cash4Life® are blue, and Print ‘n Play games are shown in orange.

We’ve also seen plenty of Lottery players taking advantage of our Online Play subscriptions program and playing games through the Virginia Lottery app. In May, more than 700 online and mobile players won more than $219,000 in total prizes!
