See our latest Virginia Lottery winners from August and September

With summer sunshine behind us and the bright colors of fall right around the corner, we thought it would be a great time to check in on the latest Virginia Lottery winners across the commonwealth. We had a lot of great winners in August and September, so read on to learn more about these Lottery players winning big!

August 2020 Winners

In August, we had more than $113 million in prizes claimed across Virginia. When you add up the prizes of $1,000 or more, that’s more than 2,400 players winning nearly $14 million in total prizes. And how did they do it? By playing exciting games such as Scratchers, Print ‘n Play Rolling Jackpot, Powerball, and our newest draw game, Keno!

One of those winners was Raymond Harrington of Virginia Beach. He won 25 times in the same Pick 4 drawing; he played the same four-digit combination: 4-6-4-0. Each of his tickets won the game’s $5,000 top prize, which made for a grand total of $125,000.

“Something just told me to play 25 times,” he later told Lottery officials.

Another exciting win happened to Carla Payne - but you wouldn’t have known it. The Stafford woman said, “I get loud if I don’t win,” but when she scratched a Lucky 7s Cash Blowout Scratcher, she got very quiet.

Why? Because she had just won the game’s top prize of $2,777,777!

“I almost passed out!” she said. “I ran out to the car, jumped in and locked the doors! It’s very surreal!"

But your local corner store isn’t the only place Lottery players are winning big - they're also winning by playing Virginia Lottery games online! In August, players won playing games such as Mega Millions and our new online instant games. In total, more than 340 winners claimed prizes worth $1,000 or more- to the tune of $1.96 million!

September 2020 Winners

And, of course, the fun didn’t stop in September: Players claimed more than $107 million in prizes overall during the month. On the map below, you’ll see prizes valued at $1,000 or more that were claimed in September. There are more than 2,500 winners, and those winners claimed a total of more than $16.8 million.

One of those winners was James Marsden of Dumfries. He won $1 million – AFTER taxes – playing the Lottery’s Bank a Million game.

“I’m still processing it,” he told Lottery officials.

For many Lottery players, family birthdays are a great way to select numbers. Marilyn Dodson of Manassas is no different. When she recently played the Virginia Lottery’s Cash 5 game, she chose numbers that correspond to her daughters’ birthdays. That paid off in a big way when she matched all five numbers to win the game’s $100,00 top prize.

“I was shocked,” she told Lottery officials as she claimed her prize. “It feels great!”

And, if you haven’t heard, our Cash 5 game is changing soon. Check out our blog post to learn more about big changes coming to Cash 5 on October 26!

We had plenty of winners claiming prizes for our online games in September too.

When Thomas Guthrie won a big prize, he did it without leaving his home. The Hopewell man played Cash4Life® online and won the game’s second prize of $1,000 per week for life – that’s $52,000 per year for the rest of his life.

“I was jumping up and down,” he told Virginia Lottery officials. “It was quite a wake-up!”

Mr. Guthrie said he chose to play online because of the convenience.

“I didn’t want to go into the store every time,” he said.
