“Paradox of Liberty” comes to Richmond

In addition to the annual turnover of profits to Virginia’s Department of Education, the Lottery supports public education through various partnerships with a variety of organizations. Some of these organizations are the Virginia Parent Teacher Association (VAPTA), the Science Museum of Virginia (SMV), CodeVA, and, new in 2020, the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia (BHMVA).

This spring, the Virginia Lottery is proud to partner with BHMVA to bring the world-class exhibit “Paradox of Liberty: Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello” to Richmond.

The exhibit explores early African American history through narratives and artifacts from slaves at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. Lottery employees were present at the grand opening of the exhibit and will volunteer at the exhibit throughout its stay in Richmond. One employee had this to say about the exhibit: “It is beautifully set up and so full of information that you could spend an entire day in there and not have a chance to see and read everything.”

“Paradox of Liberty” has traveled to museums across the country including the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia and the African American Museum of History in Dallas. The Lottery is thrilled to partner with the BHMVA to bring the exhibit to Richmond. “Paradox of Liberty” is open to the public through April 18.
